Lust and friendship brought us together, but with the increasing demands of my two businesses, Hannah’s thriving bakery, and our successful event-planning company, stability becomes my focus.

Then a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity takes me to the West Coast, and everything goes into a tailspin.

Laughter, love, and excitement fill our lives, but Cade refuses to settle into the wonderful bliss we’ve found—he wants spectacular fireworks and an unshakable foundation. Driven like no one I’ve ever met, Cade insists a dream job across the country will be better for our future together, but I worry about whether we can survive the present apart.

When intimate time diminishes…and lives get more hectic…

Will a little bit of faith be all that it takes? Or will the sacrifice to get there be too great?

A few factoids about the writing team… Kat enjoys her chocolate rich and dark, her music edgy and soul-filling, and her vacations exotic with toes dug into the sand. And she’s wildly, madly, deeply in love with Stone. Stone likes pounding the trails on a mountain bike, vibrating the sound system with rock music, and down time spent on a stand up paddleboard. And he loves Kat wildly, madly, deeply…and then some. Together, they’re having a blast bringing fun-filled romantic stories to life and hope you’ll join them in the exciting adventure. Kat’s first published work, Utterly Loved, was a twentieth anniversary gift of love poems to Stone that they decided to share with the world to benefit charity. Net proceeds from Utterly Loved, and a portion of net proceeds from all their books, go toward charities involved in the fight against human trafficking. Kat and Stone live amid the beautiful Sonoran Desert of Arizona.

“Where are you?” Cade asked.

“Your room.” After the gallery exhibit ended, I needed to be near him. But surrounded by his stuff was the closest I could get. Thank God Mase hadn’t asked when I’d shown up at their doorstep, he’d only given me an understanding look.

Cade insisted he felt better only moments ago. Then he refused to talk about his condition.

The phone was pressed to my ear, its glow, his existence, the only light in the darkness. I closed my eyes and turned slightly, pressing my nose into the pillow, inhaling deeply. Cade’s scent mixed with my heartache for him filled me with an incomparable longing. With effort, I could almost imagine him here wrapped around me. Almost.

“Where in my room?”

“Your bed.”

“I’m liking this bedtime story.” His voice deepened, turning gruff.

His primal tone sizzled an erotic charge through me and my breath caught. Then I grinned, my melancholy shattering. He did that to me. Turned me inside out on a word, a phrase, the sexy loaded undercurrent of his voice.

On a shaky exhale, I tightened my hand on the phone. The electronic tie to him was hot on my skin. He was right there with me, and at the same time, so far away. “Wish you were here. Miss you like crazy.”

“Me too, Maestro. Like you wouldn’t believe.”

“Really?” Did I voice that? My doubt about his side versus mine? “Does it hurt? Because mine does. I used to think that the good-bye was the hardest part. It’s not. Not by a long shot.”

“No,” he agreed. “It’s every moment you’re dying to share in person.”

I nodded. “The drop-ins and unexpected surprises. All the times I don’t think I’m going to see you, and then, there you are, my sexy-as-fuck dream standing in my doorway.”

A low chuckle sounded out. “Did you just call me sexy as fuck?”

My cheeks began to cramp with my huge smile. Just having him on the line was like thousand-dollar-an-hour therapy. “Maybe.”

“No, I’m definitely sure I heard it. Say it again.”

I swallowed hard and said in a low rumble, “Sexy as fuck.”

His heavy exhale sounded over the phone. “Damn, I miss you. Three more days. I will be there by Thursday night. Count on it.”

Confused about his early midweek arrival, I furrowed my brow. Then it hit me. Thursday was December 11th, my birthday. Even though I’d completely forgotten, he’d remembered. “You better. If you don’t, the rest of the CDs you abandoned here are gonna get it.”

He barked out a laugh. “What are you going to do? Take my favorites hostage?”

Alone in the dark, I narrowed my eyes, even though he couldn’t see. “Oh, no. I’m going to put your entire collection into a random shuffle.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“Try me, sexy boy. If you don’t get here on time, as promised, all this longing I feel for you will reach a breaking point. Girl needs an outlet. I’m thinking the CDs are a great start.”

He groaned. Then laughed. “Do your worst. If I am even a minute late. I’ll take my licks like a man.”

The thought of punishing him sent my mind guttering. Clearly I’d been exposed to him too long. “Oh, and how do you do it like a man?” My lips spit out the uncensored question before I could stop them.

His low growl vibrated in my ear. “Those are licks I’ll be giving you, Maestro. That’s how I do it like a man. Has it been so long that you don’t remember? I think you need intensive reeducation.”

His playfulness warmed my heart. Sparked the naughty girl inside of me to life. His naughty girl. “Maybe I do.”

He dragged his words out. “Slow, unbelievably slow. To make sure you’re paying attention.”

On a hard swallow, I buried my face into his pillow and took another deep breath. “Oh, you have my attention.”

“Teeth, dragged across skin.”

A shudder ran through me. “I like…”

“I know you do.” He paused. “Kiss after kiss, soft, teasing…”

“You’re teasing me now…”

Twins born just five minutes apart, they have the perfect life… Until tragedy strikes just weeks after their eighth birthday and their father is killed by a drunk driver. Having trouble coping with the loss of her soul mate, their mother tries to find comfort in drugs and alcohol… And an abusive man with a penchant for underage girls.

No longer able to stand listening to his sister’s screams and cries every night for nearly three years, Cam takes matters into his own hands and they’re finally able to escape the nightmare.

They’re finally able to start over…

But the nightmare still haunts Marley. The years go on and she is forced to put on a smile, making everyone think that she is the perfect, well-adjusted teenager that she is supposed to be… Until she is faced with a painful reminder of her past during her senior year of high school and she’s no longer able to keep on the mask that she has been compelled to wear.

Heart Of Marley is a prequel novel to T.K. Leigh’s Heart Of Light.

Guys…I honestly don’t even know where to begin with my review of Heart of Marley.

This book was so damn raw…

so emotional…

so real and honest and just plain heart-wrenching!

I literally spent the last 20% of Heart of Marley reading through constant tears!! I have not read a book that had such a strong effect on me in a very long time.

The subject matter is deep and dark but sadly realistic. The life that Marley and Cam have lived is more ‘normal’ than anyone would like to believe. Having dealt with abuse as a child, I found parts of this book very therapeutic and some parts extremely difficult to get through. The thoughts running through Marley’s head…the way she wore a mask to hide the truth…I’ve been there and hell even after all these years I still have days where I’m there.

I have to say that I was very surprised by the religious aspect of the book. I loved that T.K. gave a more realistic view of this situation than most books do. The first time I read the line ‘Turn to Him and He will help you through it. God is the only therapy you need.’ (Not word for word what T.K. wrote but you get the gist.) I honestly cringed. I always hate it when books/movies make it seem like therapy is a bad thing. I want to scream at the world and the people that have made that stigma a reality. Some things hurt…some things scar…and there are some things that you NEED to get help for and there is NOTHING wrong with that!

When T.K. took this horrible subject matter and managed to show the world the truth behind the lies…the damage that not seeking help can cause…I lost it. I have never wanted to find an author and thank them so much in my life. Heart of Marley gives girls, boys, women and men a voice and makes it clear that admitting that you need help is not a weakness it is a strength. Bottling your thoughts and feelings inside and hiding the truth from the world doesn’t help anyone. (Hell, just writing this review has me tearing up again….)

I want to stop my review right here and now and say one thing to T.K. Leigh if she reads this…Thank you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your words, for this story, for taking the time to write something so difficult. Thank you for giving me a voice and reminding me that it’s okay to show your scars and it’s okay to ask for help. Thank you so very much for this book (as well as Heart of Light, that was just as amazing).

Okay, sorry for that guys…back to my review.

I’m not going to go into too much detail with the story line because honestly there isn’t much I can say that won’t be a spoiler. Cam and Marley are such amazingly developed characters. T.K. did an excellent job of depicting what someone growing up in this situation would be like. Everything felt realistic and was extremely well written. This story is an emotional roller-coaster that will grip you from page one and will not let you go…even after you reach the end.

Heart of Marley left me bawling and yet so deeply moved that I had to know more. I had to read Heart of Light and see what came next. If you can’t tell already, I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone and everyone that has a chance to read it.

Originally from New England, she now resides in sunny Southern California with her husband, dog and three cats, all of which she has rescued (including the husband). She always had a knack for writing, but mostly in the legal field. It wasn’t until recently that she decided to try her hand at creative writing and is now addicted to creating different characters and new and unique story lines in the Contemporary Romantic Suspense genre. When she’s not planted in front of her computer, writing away, she can be found running and training for her next marathon (of which she has run over fifteen fulls and far too many halfs to recall). Unlike Olivia, the main character in her Beautiful Mess series, she has yet to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

“Thanks for asking me to come. I mean, tonight… I mean, for asking me to go to the bonfire with you. Not for asking me to come. That doesn’t sound right.” My face flamed red with embarrassment.

He smiled at me and winked. “No but, if you ask me, it sounds good.”

I halted in my tracks, completely frozen in place. I can do this, I said to myself. He was just joking. He doesn’t mean anything by it. It’s just a harmless joke, Marley. Just a joke.

He noticed my reaction and turned to face me on the street. “I’m so sorry, Marley. That was completely inappropriate. I don’t know what possessed me to say that. That’s not the way my mama raised me. I really am a good guy. I normally wouldn’t joke like that. You’ve got to believe that I didn’t mean anything by it. Please.” He slumped his shoulders, the formerly confident Doug replaced by a Doug that was full of remorse. “I understand if you don’t want to come with me.”

My eyes grew wide, more in irony than dread or concern.

“I mean, you don’t have to go to the bonfire with me. God, I really hate that word right now.”

I giggled. “Me, too.” I raised my head and met his pleading eyes. I could tell that he was bracing for me to turn around and walk away from him, but that was the last thing I wanted to do.

“Come. Say it with me. Come…” I said to him. “It feels good.” Throwing my head back to look at the stars in the sky, I shouted to the heavens, “Come!” I raised my arms like an angel and spun around, screaming the word over and over again. I must have looked like a spectacle, but I didn’t care. I didn’t want one word to come between what could blossom into a good thing with Doug.

I slowed my spins, but the sky kept moving even when I stopped. I attempted to regain my balance, but soon found myself tripping over my own feet.

Two arms were around me instantly, preventing me from falling to the ground. “Whoa. Careful, Marley Jane.”

I closed my eyes and basked at the sound of his voice calling me Marley Jane. Cam called me that all the time, but there was something so warm, affectionate, and thrilling about my first and middle name rolling off Doug’s tongue. Focusing my gaze on his, I was met with his brilliant green eyes.

“Hey,” I breathed.

“Hey.”

“You still haven’t said it.”

He scrunched his eyebrows at me. “Said what?”

A grin crossed my face. “Come.”

“How would you like me, Mr. Maxwell?”

His dick throbbed and strained against his zipper. And then something else happened in his pants. His motherfucking phone buzzed. Dean was struck by the impulse to pitch the thing into the ocean. He slipped it out of his pocked and tossed it in the same direction Fate’s dress had gone.

“Should you get that?” Judging from the impish expression on her face, she was teasing him.

“The next person or thing that interrupts us is getting thrown into the ocean.” He wasn’t kidding.

“Feels like the universe might be against us,” she said softly when his phone began buzzing incessantly on the couch where it had landed.

“Fuck the universe. Come.” Dean held out a hand, his heart speeding noticeably when she took it. He led her into his bedroom, where the balcony doors were still open. “This isn’t how it was supposed to go.”

“You had a plan, did you?”

“Maybe.” He sure as hell did. One he’d been formulating since she’d disappeared on him in June.

“Wanna tell me about it?”

“I’d rather show you.” Dropping to his knees at the foot of the bed, Dean pulled her to him and placed a wet, open mouthed kiss on her stomach.

“Dean,” she breathed as she ran her fingers through his hair. “You’re still in your suit.”

“I need to taste you. Need to make you come on my tongue. Can you do that for me, baby?”

Her body trembled against him.

“Y-yes. Yes, I can.”

He kissed her hipbone once more, roughly lashing his tongue against her skin. “Nothing else is going to get in our way this weekend, Fate. I am going to fuck you every way imaginable.

He’s rough, hardened and tatted on the outside and never once thought that he deserved to be loved. Despite his upbringing, he’s dedicated his life to helping others. When his old friend Asher Wellington calls upon his services, he drops everything knowing he has a lifetime of debt to fulfill to this family. But, what he didn’t expect was to meet Chloe.

Chloe Peters grew up in a privileged, picture perfect life with amazing parents and her twin brother, Kyle. She and Kyle were living out their lifelong dream until one second, one moment in time changed everything and sent her into a tailspin she thought she could never recover from.

Will the exchange of deep dark pain in the eyes of two hardened souls open the door to a happily ever after?

Can Max show Chloe that there can be life after tragedy? Can Chloe Show Max that he is worthy of love?

Sometimes the hardest person to forgive, is yourself.

This is a mature audience book, and is intended for adults only.

Isn’t sleep just totally adorable when it tries to compete with the book your reading?

I just dealt with this!! I finished my writing for the night and thought ‘Oh, it’s only 10:30, I can totally start reading A Fighting chance by Author Annalisa Nicole and finish it tomorrow to review on Monday’s release day!’ Yeah…guess finished the book at nearly 3 am and fell asleep with tears in her eyes over the story?!?!

While the writing style was a tad different than what I’m used to, basically the dual POVs overlapped a bit along with some wording, but by the time I was half way through chapter one…I just didn’t care and I ADORED it! The story line captured me so fully and completely that nothing else mattered! Including the fact that my time to sleep was quickly disappearing without my noticing!

Guys…seriously…this book…just WOW!

Before I was part of the way through chapter one, which is just there to sort of catch you up on what has happened in the previous book with the main characters (I totally appreciated this seeing as I have yet to read the other books in the series), I had developed such an attachment to both Chloe and Max that I simply had to know what happened. There was no ‘Well here is a good stopping point, I think I’ll sleep now so I’m not a zombie tomorrow’. Oh no! This book was action packed, filled with love, tears, A SHIT TON OF SNOT and romance that left me absolutely breathless and begging for more!

It was intense.

It was heart wrenching.

It was emotional.

It was crazy and perfect and epic and flawless and …. well you get the point!

Max had his ‘stupid man’ moments…but the book wouldn’t be worth reading if everything was all ‘sunshine and floaty hearts’. Every book needs it’s drama. It’s tension. Trust me, Annalisa Nicole has tension down to a science…an art form! It’s just amazing how perfectly she manages to make me both adore and loath Max during parts of this book. I get why he did what he did…and yet I still got pissed off at him as I read in Chloe’s POV.

I am still amazed and perplexed by the fact that I connected with both characters to such a point that as the POV switched…my outlook and thoughts and feelings towards the situation switched along with it! I can honestly say that this is a first for me!

The romance flowed naturally. I love it when a book makes the characters take their time, not rush into the physical relationship, especially with extenuating circumstances such as these. The sexual tension and desire wasn’t overwhelming and the sex scenes, when they finally came, were well written and left my mouth a little dry and my thoughts in some pretty naughty places!

The characters are well developed. Deep. Real. Raw. Emotional. Addictive. And so well written that I couldn’t help but feel as if I was one of the other characters along for the ride! I love that we get a glance at the characters from the past book (which I am totally dying to read now) while still focusing on the main characters in this book. This family was so close and so loving and accepting. I couldn’t help but fall a little bit in love with every last one of them!

Overall, this author and this book are amazing! I definitely recommend you heading over to Amazon and falling in love with the characters just as I did! The story is impeccable, the characters are extremely well developed and lovable and the romance is one that will leave you wanting more and yet knowing that they totally got the HEA that they deserved!

I live in California with my husband and two teenage boys. I love being a stay at home mom. My husband and I enjoy wine tasting and camping with our kids with our four wheelers in the middle of nowhere, where you can find me with my pink Ryder BB gun! We have a handful of pets, a dog named Lucy (who is in my books) and a guinea pig named Flufy (my son spelled her name that way) and a cat who adopted us many years ago and has never left. She is a spoiled outdoor cat with her own two story house and a heated bed.

I never liked reading as a kid. I only started reading romance novels in the past few years. My Kindle and I are inseparable now. A thought occurred to me in December of 2012 that maybe I could write a romance novel. So I went to work with the encouragement of my husband and my sister-in-law. It didn’t take long to figure out that I really enjoyed writing.

Today I am a self published author and it has been an amazing journey.

Jackson clutched the stone wall of his chamber and gasped for air. What had just happened? He had returned to Cymmera, of that he was certain, but how? He hadn’t accessed the gateway. At least he didn’t remember opening it. A vision of her assailed him, beat at him, reminded him that he’d failed.

Oh, man. He was in trouble. He pushed away from the wall.

Images of his target taunted him.

He shoved a chair aside and tore through the pictures scattered across the table in a desperate search for salvation. There. He pulled the shot from the mess but found only condemnation. The long blond hair flowing behind her in the snapshot had not been visible to him, but there was no mistaking the deep blue of her eyes.

The pounding of a fist against the heavy wood door released him from whatever spell she’d cast.

“Jackson.” Another loud thud punctuated his name.

He struggled to get his bearings, tried to slow the racing of his heart. “Yeah, one minute.”

“Now. Your father wants to see you, immediately.”

Kai, his father’s most trusted warrior. He was in more trouble than he’d originally thought. Was it possible the king would sentence him to death for ignoring a direct order? Surely not without offering him a fair trial, or at least granting him the opportunity to explain. But what could he say? What explanation could there be for failing to deliver the girl? None.

“I won’t knock again.” The warrior would soon break down the door and drag him before the throne.

He crumpled the offending photo, the evidence of his disgrace, into a ball. Instead of tossing it in the trash as he’d intended, he shoved it into the small leather satchel he wore at his waist. With a deep breath, he released the latch and pulled open the door.

“Come.” Kai turned his back on him and strode purposefully down the corridor, their footfalls echoing through the silence of accusation.

The thought of escape taunted him, but he would never make it out of the castle. He had only recently completed his warrior training under Kai’s watch and would be no match for the seasoned soldier. Besides, Kai was a stickler for the rules. If he tried to run, the warrior would surely take him down, protégé or not.

We have a lovely cover reveal today for Partners by Lilliana Anderson. I’m so excited for this prequel to the FIRES & LIES series. So without further ado:

Add on Goodreads | Preoder on iTunes

Rules are made to be broken…

All her life, Chloe Donovan played by the rules. She was good. She was daddy’s perfect little girl. That was, until those rules failed her and her family, causing them to lose everything they had worked for.

With her father lying in hospital unconscious, and her mother caught in the depths of depression, it’s up to Chloe to find out the truth and put the real criminals behind bars.

But to do that, she needs help.

Aiden Price was once the head of security at the decimated Donovan Corporation. He protected Chloe, her family, and their clients, as millions of dollars changed hands on a daily basis. Now, with the company in ruins, he has branched out on his own and created the successful, Price Security.

Aiden is the only person her father trusted, which makes him the only person Chloe can trust.

The problem is, he doesn’t trust Chloe. A previous moment of weakness and passion saw Chloe enter and leave his life like a ghost in the night. Aiden isn’t the kind of man a girl walks out on. He says when it’s over. Not the other way around.

On top of that, he doesn’t have any lost love for Chloe’s father. As far as he’s concerned, it was her father who sold the company out which allowed for the aggressive takeover to take place. That act saw his and thousands of other jobs lost. Aiden is a man of honor, and he can’t forgive an action that he saw as guided by pure greed.

It’s up to Chloe to convince Aiden that everything he thinks he knows is a lie. But Aiden doesn’t do anything for free. Partnering up is going to cost Chloe dearly. She just wasn’t expecting to have to pay with her heart…

“Not one to take a hint are you?” he grumbles as he heads up the path and climbs the steps.

I push off the railing and stand to meet him by his front door. “It’s important.”

“So you keep saying.” He sounds tired, his voice much softer than it had been earlier and he inserts his key, pushing the front door open.

As he walks past me, I smell the faint scent of another woman’s perfume and my mouth speaks before my brain connects. “Have you been with someone?”

Stepping inside his home, he pauses and blocks the door. “That is absolutely none of your business,” he states.

“Does this girl know that you were in your office dry humping me before her? Does she know I’m the one that got you fired up?” I’m attacking him and it’s stupid and unwarranted. Essentially, I have no right to be behaving this way. But I can’t seem to stop myself from feeling a jealous rage at the thought of him with another woman.

His eyes narrow for a moment and within a blink of the eye his arms shoot out and he grabs me, hauling me through the door and slamming me against the wall. The movement surprises me and I gasp and follow my instinct to fight him. He flattens his body against mine, pinning me so I can’t move and he grabs my wrists pressing them together over my head.

I wriggle beneath him, feeling way out of my depth. I talk tough, but in this moment, I feel anything but. “Let me go, Aiden,” I demand through clenched teeth.

“Why? Isn’t this what you came here for?” He readjusts his grip so he can hold both of my wrists in one hand then trails his other one down my arm. “It’s why you’re here acting like a jealous girlfriend, right?” His hand pauses at my throat and wraps around it uncomfortably as he leans into me, brushing his rough stubble across the skin of my cheeks. “Do you want me to fuck you, Chloe?” He pushes his groin against me and I can feel his erection dig into me. I wince. “No? Then what?” His breath is hot and his fingers tighten around my throat as his mouth moves toward my ear and he growls, “What the fuck do you want from me?”

Tears burn in my eyes and I them shut, suddenly feeling as though I’ve pushed him too far. I should have told Leah to go fuck himself. I should have stayed home and thought of another way to get Aiden to listen.

Things are different now. So much has happened in the last three years. So much has changed in each of our lives. We’re different people. Capable of different things. When you back a person into a corner, you can’t always be sure how they’ll react…

I twist my head away from him as my emotions hit me and I let out a strained sob. I didn’t want to cry. I wanted to stay in control but he’s scaring me. At the sound of my cry, his grip lessens, it’s as if he suddenly realizes what he’s doing and he slowly releases me.

“Shit,” he hisses, taking a step back to give me some space to move. I don’t waste my time, the moment my hands are free, I swing my body, bringing my arm around and slap him loudly across the face.

“Fuck you, Aiden! Fuck you!” I scream, my body shaking with fear, desire and anger from his intimidation tactic.

His cheek becomes immediately inflamed and I watch the red bloom across his skin, as I glare up at him, angry that we’re even in this situation. Things used to be so different between us…

“I guess I deserved that,” he admits.

When Flannery Tate left home for a college halfway across the country in Michigan, she’d only planned on getting an education. But when Cain Dorsey walked into her life, she had no choice but to fall for him. However, what’s a girl to do when her scholarship well runs dry? Return home? Get a job?

Flannery gets creative. She decides to sell the most precious and valuable thing she can – her virginity – to the highest bidder. When Cain discovers her plan, their world crumbles. Will they be able to move past her betrayal and find a way back to each other? Or, is this the beginning of the end?

UP FOR GRABS is a story of love, heartbreak and truth.

Heather Young-Nichols was born and raised in Saginaw, Michigan and graduated from nearby Saginaw Valley State University with a degree in sociology. The only thing that rivals her love of reading and writing is her love of baseball. When not with her husband and three kids or the cat that likes to bite, she is working to bring the characters in her head to life.

Adam leaned back in his chair with his feet propped up on mine. I kicked his hoofers off so I could sit.

“No coffee?” He doesn’t try to whisper or anything.

I thought the class rather enjoyed the twice a week comedy we provided. They watched us close enough but could also have been trying to decide if we were a couple. We tried that once. Just a kiss but I imagined that was what kissing a blood relative would’ve been like. So, it didn’t work out. It wasn’t an unrequited love kind of thing either. He’d laughed equally as hard as I did. Then he hooked up with Lara Sanders, the village bicycle in West Hall.

“Overslept.”

“That stinks.” I knew he was messing with me by the tone of his voice. The next thing I heard was loud slurping as he emptied his very large cup of coffee. He even did a satisfied “ahhh” at the end, the rotten son of a bitch.

Turning just enough for him to see me, I gave my absolute best dusty eyeball. “You suck.”

“You can have mine,” the warm voice beside me suggested. Cain Dorsey was offering me his coffee?

“I can’t take your coffee.”

“Why not? I don’t have cooties. Plus, I haven’t had a drink yet. Take it.” He reached the cup out so that I could smell the roasted goodness lurking beneath the plastic lid. The black silk seduced me with one sniff.

Trying to stifle the smile that was breaking out across my face, my natural talent for witty come backs disappeared. I was thinking that maybe his cooties wouldn’t be so bad to catch anyway. My stomach tingled slightly under his gaze.

“Take the fucking coffee so we’ll be able to stand you,” Adam interrupted and I reached back with a playful, yet significant, smack to the top of his head.

In the end, I took the coffee. It felt so good going down and the effects started immediately. I felt more awake and sharp.

“Oh god,” my eyes rolled back in my head in a slightly orgasmic way. Yup, I loved coffee that much. “I think I need to marry you.” I said to Cain without thinking. So used to sparing with Adam, it didn’t occur to me that Cain might not take my comments as intended.

My nerves calmed when he broke into a hearty laugh, filling the entire room and drawing Hendrick’s attention.

He didn’t seem to notice the added attention. “If I’d known it’d be that easy … ”

My job, my life, depends on it. I thought this job would be easy, all the rules were made crystal clear, but when I met Carrie Wallington, everything got muddy. She’s a rule I know I shouldn’t break, but damn if I don’t inch closer to the breaking point each time I see her. I’m ready to step out of line. And even worse? I’m living a lie. They say the truth will set you free, but in my case…

The truth will cost me everything.

***OUT OF TIME***

Being Carrie’s bodyguard was one thing. Being her boyfriend is another. Every day she’s mine is a day the sun shines in my life. Yet our time together is running out. Her father will never think a tattooed Marine will be good enough, so I’ll do whatever it takes to be worthy of her love. But the road will take me away from the girl who makes me feel alive–the girl I can’t live without.

Time only gets us so far…

***OUT OF MIND***

All I wanted was to be worthy of Carrie. One mission, just one, and I’d be able to give her the future she deserved. Then everything went wrong, leaving me tainted and broken. Carrie wants me to be who I was, but all that’s left is what they made of me. I’m no good for her. No good for anyone like this. I have to figure out how to move forward. Alone.

Sometimes love isn’t enough…

“Okay, you put one foot on and kind of push up like this.” I did what I described and climbed up a little unsteadily, almost catching myself off guard. Hell, it had been a long time for me. “But make sure to hold on tight with your hands while spreading them—but not too far. You don’t want to throw off the balance.”

She watched me, her brow furrowed, then did as I said. She set one foot up high, tested her weight, but then righted herself. She lifted her other foot, her brow furrowed with concentration. “Like this?”

“Yep.” I climbed up a little higher again. “Do it again.”

She did it, much more steadily this time. “It’s almost rope climbing, only you’re stepping instead of wrapping yourself around something.”

“Except the wall,” I said dryly.

“Well, duh,” she said, rolling her eyes. “Obviously.”

I stretched my arms and took another step higher. “Attitude, Ginger.Attitude.”

“Now you’re just showing off.” She followed me, going a lot faster this time. I wanted to grab her and steady her when she wobbled, but I clenched my fists and let her do it for herself. She needed this. “Look, that was pretty good, huh?”

“Yeah, it was.” I grinned at her. “Watch this.”

I climbed double the length that I’d been doing, stretching my muscles as far as they could go without falling off the damn wall. She laughed, her eyes shining. “I can do that, too.”

I side-eyed her. “You think?”

“Dude.” She pursed her lips and looked to the top of the wall. “What is the worst that can happen? I fall and the harness catches me? Somehow I think I’ll survive.”

I shook my head. “Fine. It’s your ass, not mine.”

Technically, it was mine, too. I was supposed to be protecting her, not taking her rock climbing, but whatever. The girl needed to live, for fuck’s sake.

She’d spent her whole life being watched by men like me not letting her step out of line for even a second. Now she was able to do so. I might be watching her, but I’d be damned if I suffocated her like her father.

We spent the next half hour climbing higher and higher, then we practiced climbing down. She slipped and fell more times than I could count—fine, it was seven—before we finally called it quits. I let her be the one to decide when she’d had enough.

She stood at the bottom of the wall after her last fall, snapping pictures and a few videos with her phone. Her laugh rang loud and clear as I descended to join her. She was so fucking bright and happy. She really was the sun to me.

The only thing that brought true brightness to my world.
